What kind of packaging tape do I need?

Types of packaging tapes and their features

Acrylic Packing Tape

Acrylic packaging tape is crystal clear, will not interfere with exterior markings and labels, and instantly bonds to corrugated boxes and surfaces. Acrylics have a wider temperature range than hot melts (32 degrees F to 150 degrees F) versus Hot melt (40 degrees F to 120 degrees F) and performs better in in high humidity conditions. They are best suited for applications in tough environments such as refrigerated food packing facilities. Commonly referred to as "Box Tape" or "Carton Sealing Tape," it is one of the most popular, economical, and durable tapes for your packaging needs.

  • Instantly bonds to corrugated boxes and cartons
  • Premium UV resistance
  • Great permanent surface adhesion
  • High Clarity transparency for viewing markings and carton labels
  • Ages well over extended periods in sunlight and fluorescent lighting
  • Fast stick performance
  • High shear strength

Water Activated Paper Tape

Water activated tape is primarily white or natural colored kraft paper with a starch-based adhesive. It's usually available in various widths and thicknesses and might contain multiple layers with fiberglass reinforcement, depending on the strength necessary. When the adhesive is activated with water, it penetrates the carton material, forming a permanent bond. Water-activated tape bonds instantly to both virgin and recycled fiber surfaces and therefore, generates an immediate destructive bond resulting in a tamper evident package. WAT Paper Tape (Gummed Tape, Gum Tape, Kraft Tape) is offered in both fiberglass reinforced and plain paper with many styles available.

  • Better, faster, stronger than pressure-sensitive packing tape
  • Provides a tamper-evident seal
  • Difficult to remove without leaving obvious sings of tampering
  • Easy to print on (advertise your brand)
  • Retains integrity if punctured
  • Can be using in dusty or dirty environments
  • Maintains seal in extremes of cold, heat, light, humidity
  • Only one strip is needed to produce a sturdy seal
  • Recyclable

PVC Tapes

PVC tape is notable for its ability to resist tearing and puncturing, while providing stability for medium and high weight shipments. It also sticks instantly with less stretch to provide easy use with both manual and automated equipment. PVC tape also preforms at very low and very high temp conditions. PVC tape meets the shipping requirement of UPS and USPS along with the RR Carload requirements.

They are also a Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA). Pressure Sensitive Adhesives do not require solvent, water, or heat to activate the adhesive. Rather, they are bonded by the initial force of application. PSA will adhere to a variety of diverse materials such as paper, glass, wood, plastic or metal, when applied to clean and dry surfaces with no more than finger or hand pressure. A PSA has a balance between adhesion and cohesion forces.

  • Thinner and lighter materials
  • Bonds various substrates
  • Inherently tacky
  • Tailorable to the application
  • Can serve a variety of temperature ranges
  • Eliminates the need for surface refinishing
  • Eliminates the need for mechanical fasteners
  • Safe and easy to install or apply
  • Cost effective to apply

Filament Tape

Filament tape is a packaging tape that is reinforced with fiberglass strands and has superior adhesion properties, making it ideal for light to medium loads. This tape serves a wide variety of purposes in the manufacturing process, beginning with initial package closing, but also being used to reinforce single products and bundle multiple into a group for shipment. It can also potentially be used as part of the end-product in some instances. Filament tapes are constructed of polypropylene film that is glass-reinforced and that has an aggressive natural rubber based adhesive system. These filament tapes have high tensile strength that can be enhanced with additional glass fibers. Consequently, there are low, medium, and high-grade products.

  • Can be torn by hand, so no equipment necessary
  • Ideal for a wide variety of utilization
  • Constructed with fiberglass filaments embedded into the adhesive
  • Resistant to tears, scuffing, splitting and abrasion with high tensile strength.
  • Stronger than other closures such as glues or twine.
  • Economic alternative to industrial packaging materials and yet just as efficient in its performance.
  • Clean removal, leaving behind no residue.
  • Tensile strengths of strapping and filament tapes range from 100lbs to 600lbs per inch of width

Duct Tape

Duct tape is an acrylic tape that, due to its good shear and heat resistance, is very versatile and useful in a wide variety of industries, especially in the HVAC industry, where it was first introduced.  Acrylic adhesives are industrially manufactured, and thus can be manipulated based on the selection of the monomers used in the formulation. Unlike the natural and synthetic rubbers, acrylics are tacky by nature. They have long polymer chains which are cross-linked to increase their performance. As a result, they form strong, age-resistance bond all while maintaining a lightweight feel.

Advantages:

  • High transparency
  • High aging stability (acrylics do not yellow with age)
  • High shear resistance at elevated temperatures
  • High resistance to UV, ozone and humidity
  • High resistance to solvents & plasticizers
  • Very good peel adhesion to polar surfaces
  • Best useful in long-term, outdoor applications

Strapping Tape

If you are looking to secure pallets for shipment, strapping tape may be your best choice. It is great for securing the upper rows of pallets, as it is flexible enough to not damage packaging while maintaining the structural integrity of the shipment. Strapping tape comes in three grades of product, beginning with general purpose and ranging up to standard and heavy duty options.

Hot Melt Tape

Hot Melt tapes have three layers: the carrier film layer, a layer of synthetic rubber resin adhesive, and a coating that allows the tape to unwind off the roll. The adhesive is very aggressive and is the best option for use with automated case sealers or high volume operations where instantaneous adhesion is required. Hot melt packing tape is one of the most flexible types of tape available when it comes to application variety. They are among the most efficient in terms of automated application and provide users with a reliable seal that forms consistently due to the holding force, superior tensile strength and adhesion properties of the tape.

  • Hot melt tapes offer exceptional adhesion strength, flexibility, and performs well in varying applications
  • Machine grade hot melt tapes generally perform more reliably than machine grade acrylic tapes
  • Provides easy unwind, as well as consistent and reliable seals
  • Higher level of flexibility allows for better performance under constant strain and stress

Natural Rubber Industrial Packaging Tape

While other types of tapes often struggle to maintain strong adhesion to adverse conditions like recycled boxes, rough or ultra-smooth cartons, coated surfaces, heavy ink coverage, dirty and dusty environments, humid conditions and extreme hot or cold settings, natural rubber tape provides an aggressive adhesion that can perform. In addition to overcoming those obstacles, natural rubber tape also resists many common adhesive downfalls like salt water, dilute acids, weathering, and alkalis.

Cellophane, Vinyl & Foil Tape

Cellophane tape is more commonly referred to as "Scotch Tape" because of the overwhelming popularity of that particular brand, cellophane tape adds an adhesive backing to transparent cellophane to create a clear, sticky tape.

This product is an electrical tape made from vinyl. It stretches well and gives an effective and long lasting insulation.

The foil tape is most commonly used in sealing fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts. Depending on the process, foils can consist of either a copper or lead backing to seal thermo panels. It is most effective for these applications because of the acrylic-based adhesive component.

Masking Tape

Masking tape is a type of pressure sensitive tape made of a thin and easy-to-tear paper, and an easily released pressure sensitive adhesive. It is available in a variety of widths. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted. The adhesive is the key element to its usefulness, as it allows the tape to be easily removed without leaving residue or damaging the surface to which it is applied. The tape is available in several strengths, rated on a 1–100 scale based on the strength of the adhesive. Most painting operations will require a tape in the 50 range. Household masking tape is made of an even weaker paper and lower grade adhesive. General purpose tape is the least adhesive but performs well for tasks such as painting and light packaging. Industrial strength tape is designed for sealing and splicing and is also water and oil resistant to provide a more secure hold. Heavy duty grade masking tape provides contractor grade material designed for the construction industry needs. High temperature masking tape is great for the automotive industry, maintaining its qualities at temperature up to 250o F for up to 30 minutes while conforming neatly to strict curves.

Cloth Tape

Cloth tapes are a general purpose tape generally coated with a rubber adhesive. The non-thermosetting properties of the adhesive make it comfortable for skin contact. Cloth tapes are suitable for marking with pens of different colors for the desired purpose. Cloth tape can be used for motor coil winding and many bundling applications which do not require high tensile strength. Some cloth tapes are coated with an adhesive that is pressure sensitive and are available in a range of colors such as black, white, blue, green, yellow, red and silver.

TPP Tape

TPP tape (tensilized polypropylene tape) is a high strength tape made with polypropylene plastic and a natural or synthetic rubber adhesive. TTP tape has a unique feature that allows for it to stretch without breaking when loads shift during transport. As a result, TTP tape is highly beneficial when palletizing large shipments for transport, as well as binding larger cartons that need some give to help protect what is inside.

Flatback Paper Tape

Flatback tapes are a pressure sensitive tape, and therefor useful in a variety of packaging, splicing and tabbing applications, while being more heavy duty than masking tape. Most are hand tearable but can also be used in a variety of automated machines.
